Young Adult Spotlight: Katie Crow

BY LUKE MURRAY

How did you first find out about City on a Hill?

I first found out about City on a Hill when I was living in my hometown of Stuart, Florida. After reverting back to the faith and feeling like a bit of an island where I was living, I started searching for a larger, more vibrant Catholic community. The KC metro area came up repeatedly in my search and shortly thereafter I heard City on a Hill mentioned by name on a Pints with Aquinas episode with Joe Heschmeyer. When I actually moved here, a colleague of mine who had been involved with City on a Hill (and coincidentally met her husband at Tuesdays at the Boulevard through her involvement with CCS) encouraged me to seek out and attend the events they had.

What have you been involved in?

The initial event I went to, which introduced me to City on a Hill, was Tuesdays at the Boulevard. Since then, there is not much I haven’t been involved with in City on a Hill. Most notably, I help lead a Sisterhood group that has been active since 2023, I am part of the ConnectKC team, and I went on the Guatemala Mission Trip/Pilgrimage in 2024.

How has City on a Hill impacted or changed your life?

The impact that City on a Hill has on my life has been immense. It provided me with a “third space” when I was navigating building friendships from the ground up after moving here. It provides a really low–stakes way to invite people out to build holy friendships, where the foundation of the friendship is love for the Lord.

Why have you chosen to be a leader at City on a Hill?

I have chosen to be a leader to help give people the same opportunity I had to get plugged in and find their people.

Any general words of advice for the community?

For anyone struggling with loneliness (as I have): Friendships are not built in a day. They take time, effort, and a leap of faith. Become a regular somewhere and take the chance to get to know the people around you. Do not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone first with a smile and a kind word. Deeper connections start from small interactions and build with trust over time. Sometimes the people you meet will not be “your people” and that is okay.
