Donor & Alumni Spotlight: Ferd & Angela Niemann
BY LUKE MURRAY
How did you find City on a Hill and/or Catholic Challenge Sports?
I (Ferd) found City on a Hill and Catholic Challenge Sports from living in the Meyer Catholic Quarter. It was a lively neighborhood and there were always events and opportunities to spend time with quality friends. Angela found City on a Hill on the internet when she was moving back to Kansas City from Texas.
What were you involved with?
I was involved in nearly every City on a Hill and CCS event including Band of Brothers, Bishop Helmsing Institute, CCS sports and one-day events, Tuesdays at the Boulevard, Theology on Tap, Reservoir, retreats, and more! Angela was involved in Bishop Helmsing institute, Sisterhood, Tuesdays at the Boulevard, Reservoir, and after a year back in Kansas City she moved to the MCQ as well.
How did City on a Hill impact or change your life?
For me, City on a Hill was the spark that led to a reversion to the faith. It led to lots of opportunities to grow in faith and make fruitful friendships. And, City on a Hill is where Angela and I met! For Angela, it was the first time in her life she met so many Catholics who truly loved and lived out their faith. It inspired her to grow in faith and become excited about things she never even knew or understood about the faith, even though she was a cradle Catholic.
Why do you give to City on a Hill?
We give to City on a Hill because we know there are so many young adults that need the opportunity to know Jesus through quality friendships and events, and through the witness of other young adults. Each of us has a unique journey but there are similar challenges and hurdles to overcome and City on a Hill makes the journey easier and more fruitful due to the amazing environment and opportunities to grow in Christ.
Any general words of advice for the community?
Ferd: Attend as many events as possible and make an effort to spend time with others who are pursuing Jesus. Success leaves clues: find those who are living a holier life than you are and study them and their habits, and then emulate them. For those who are struggling, help them and spend time with them as a witness for Christ.
Angela: No matter where you are at in your faith journey, you are welcome and there is a place for you. Do not be intimidated about where you are or what you know, we all have room to grow and there’s plenty of amazing people who can walk right along with you on this journey!
