Young Adult Spotlight: Katie Crow
BY LUKE MURRAY
How did you first find out about City on a Hill?
I first found out about City on a Hill when I was living in my hometown of Stuart, Florida. After reverting back to the faith and feeling like a bit of an island where I was living, I started searching for a larger, more vibrant Catholic community. The Kansas City metro area came up repeatedly in my search and shortly thereafter I heard City on a Hill mentioned by name on a Pints with Aquinas episode with Joe Heschmeyer. When I actually moved here, a colleague of mine who had been involved with City on a Hill (and coincidentally met her husband at Tuesdays at the Boulevard through her involvement with Catholic Challenge Sports) encouraged me to seek out and attend the events they had.
Was there an initial event or experience that played a key role in becoming connected with the community?
The initial event I went to which introduced me to City on a Hill was Tuesdays at the Boulevard. I remember being moved to tears seeing all of the young adults gathered together to celebrate Mass on a random Tuesday! It was overwhelming! I knew God had answered my prayers for community and it was my job to do the legwork and build relationships from there. I immediately went to work putting myself out there to build friendships with the new connections I was making. Some of those people have become my closest friends today.
How has City on a Hill impacted or changed your life?
The impact that City on a Hill has on my life has been immense. It provided me with a low stakes way to connect with people when I was navigating building friendships from the ground up after moving here. When I was getting to know people, I could invite them to go to Tuesdays at the Boulevard, a Connect KC gathering, or even one of the retreats offered throughout the year. Sometimes I would repeatedly run into the same person at City on a Hill events and gradually build familiarity over time that way. It helped me create holy friendships where the foundation of the friendship is love for the Lord and growing in virtue together.
Why have you chosen to be a leader at City on a Hill?
I have chosen to be a leader to help give people the same opportunity I had to get plugged in and find their people. On the Connect KC team, we create smaller events where people can come out and spend time with others who enjoy doing some of the same activities they do. I love to give back and help others to find their place and their people. I want everyone who comes out to feel welcomed.
Any general words of advice for the community?
For anyone struggling with loneliness (as I have): Friendships are not built in a day. They take time, effort, and a leap of faith. Become a regular somewhere and take the chance to get to know the people around you. Do not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone first with a smile and a kind word. Deeper connections start from small interactions and build with trust over time.
