Donor & Alumni Spotlight: Marcus Kain

How did you find City on a Hill and/or Catholic Challenge Sports?
When I moved back to Kansas City from Texas, I found out about these organizations through people I met who already had been involved, and they encouraged me to come and try them out. I am so glad I did! My first City on a Hill event was Tuesdays at the Boulevard, and my first CCS sport was dodgeball.
What were you involved with?
Over the years, I have played every sport except for Ultimate Frisbee in Catholic Challenge Sports. I also attended their one-day events such as a cook-out, miniature golf tournament, and bowling tournament. I was on the board of Catholic Challenge Sports for 1 year and then was the president for 2 years. After that, I advised the board for the next 2 presidents. As for City on a Hill, I participated in a lot of activities and events over the years; some of the highlights included a retreat at Camp Tekawitha, regularly attending Tuesdays at the Boulevard, and the New Year’s Eve gatherings.
“City on a Hill was a large catalyst in helping developing me into a leader in the church community in a multitude of ways...I wouldn’t be where I am today in life without [it].”
How did City on a Hill impact or change your life?
I was at a Crossroads with my faith when I moved back to Kansas City, so City on a Hill helped me figure out important aspects of my faith journey. I found myself regularly attending Mass and having a curiosity about all aspects of my faith that did not exist prior to this point in my life—before this point, I attended Mass a fair amount of times throughout the year, but not on a weekly basis.
City on a Hill provided me the opportunity to cultivate relationships with other young adults who strived for holiness and sainthood, and these friendships helped to hold me accountable as well. It allowed me to discern my vocational path intentionally and fully. City on a Hill was a large catalyst in helping develop me into a leader in the church community in a multitude of ways: I went on to be a youth group volunteer at Church of the Ascension and lead several Kairos retreats. It’s thanks in large part to City on a Hill that I’ve grown into a better living example of faith and am able to live my vocation in married life. I wouldn’t be where I am today in life without City on a Hill, as it continues to shape me in so many ways.
Why do you give to City on a Hill?
I continue to try to support City on a Hill to this day because of how worthy the organization is, and because of its mission to genuinely bring young adults closer to Christ. I see on a daily basis how this organization continues to have a positive impact on my own life. I could list out countless other reasons, but this is the greatest one that comes to mind!
Any general words of advice for the community?
The only advice I have to provide to others is to really focus in life on your faith and family. There are a lot of distractions in our lives that take us away from these priorities. By all means cultivate other relationships in your life, but make sure to be selective in how many relationships you maintain. By doing this really well, it will help you to get the most out of your life by glorifying the Lord.
