[ WE EXIST TO BE THE COMMUNITY THAT INSPIRES OUR GENERATION TO BE SAINTS. ]
City on a Hill is a ministry of the Young Adult Office of the Diocese of Kansas City of Saint - Joseph Missouri that was founded in 2006. We build a community of faithful disciples in the KC area by supporting young adult parish groups and inviting others to our social events, sacramental encounters, and opportunities for faith formation. Our four patrons include St. Augustine of Hippo, Servant of God Chiara Corbella Petrillo, St. John Paul the Great and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati. We hope you join us in our mission of building a faithful community of disciples in KC.

MEET OUR PATRON SAINTS
ST. AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO (354-430)
A blast from the past, St. Augustine of Hippo is the only patron saint of City on a Hill not born in the 20th century. Yet he grew up in a culture remarkably similar to our own. The great Roman Empire was crumbling during Augustine’s lifetime, due to the collapse of law, order, and morality, and the culture was still fairly hostile to Christianity. Our current American culture bears many similarities to the failing Roman Empire of the 4th and 5th centuries which had lost sight of God and His natural law. St. Augustine is a powerful intercessor for us for two additional reasons. First, his intellectual prowess represents the great need for young adult Catholics today to learn their faith well in order to engage in fruitful conversation with an increasingly atheist and agnostic culture. And second, he himself went through a deep conversion as a young adult (aged 30), turning away from a life of lust, worldly entertainment, and personal ambition to instead seek after the Lord. We are counting on him to help us reach out to those of our generation who are trapped in pursuing our culture’s false presentations of happiness, and to invite them to encounter Jesus Christ.
“Our hearts are restless until they rest in you, O God.” --- St. Augustine, pray for us!
SERVANT OF GOD CHIARA CORBELLA PETRILLO
Chiara’s cause for canonization was only opened this past summer, which means that she is ripe for interceding for many things if she wants to move up the path towards canonization! Really though, this young wife and mother who passed away in 2012 has become an incredible inspiration to so many people. Having given birth to two children who died within an hour of their birth, Chiara was diagnosed with cancer during her third pregnancy. Choosing to forego treatment until the child was born, she gave birth to a healthy son, and then passed away herself a few months later. Her husband, having abandoned himself to God’s providence, remarked during her last days: “If she is going to be with someone who loves her more than I, why should I be upset?” We believe Chiara can be for us a powerful intercessor, particularly for those called to the beautiful vocation of marriage.
“The goal of our life is to love and to be loved, always ready to learn how to love others as only God can teach you. Love consumes you, but it is beautiful to die consumed, exactly like a candle that goes out only when it has reached its goal.” --- Chiara Corbella Petrillo, pray for us!
SAINT JOHN PAUL THE GREAT
In the face of the massive cultural earthquake that rocked the western world in the 20th century, and in the face of the bloodiest ideological regimes known to history, this humble Polish priest, having been chosen as the successor of St. Peter, helped to bring down communism, travelled the world encouraging His flock in every corner of the globe, presented the masterpiece known as the “Theology of the Body” --- so desperately needed in our current day and age -- and spent long nights prostrate in prayer for the sake of the entire Church. His love for young people was well-known, and his constant encouragement to “be not afraid” in evangelizing others about Christ makes him a great intercessor for us to reach out into a culture that “has chosen to act as if God didn’t exist.”
“There is no place for selfishness and no place for fear! Do not be afraid, then, when love makes demands. Do not be afraid when love requires sacrifice!” --- St. John Paul II, pray for us!
BLESSED PIER GIORGIO FRASSATI
Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati (1901-1925)
Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati represents to the max one of City on a Hill’s core values, that of being “joyfully serious.” We are both incredibly joyful about our faith, and, at the same time, serious about serving and loving Our Lord. Blessed Pier Giorgio was known for his joy and enthusiasm, his love for the Eucharist and the poor, and his passion for mountain climbing. We turn to him as a patron because, as a young adult himself, he pursued Christ with all the strength he had and reached great heights of sanctity while living in the midst of the world. Also, he boasts one of the greatest pics of a saint ever taken.
“You asked me if I am in good spirits? How could I not be so? As long as faith gives me strength I will always be joyful.” --- Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, pray for us!
